Our bodies rely upon networks to ensure proper function. For example, the networks of our nervous system communicate information between different parts of our body and integrate that information to enable us to understand and interact with the world. The networks of our circulatory system transport the nutrients and oxygen that our cells use for power, and remove the resulting waste products. The networks of our immune system mobilize available resources to keep us healthy.

Our modern society also relies upon networks for its function. For example, the internet transports information between remote locations. The computing devices interconnected by the internet gather, process, display and take action based upon that information. The electrical grid distributes the energy required to power the devices that make our daily lives more convenient. These and other similar networks can be utilized to address societal challenges in diverse areas such as energy, the environment, health care and poverty.

The technology underlying the construction, development and operation of these networks depends critically upon electronic and computer engineering (ECE). Our department at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is committed to advancing ECE through excellence in teaching and world-class research. Our goal is that our students become well-rounded and technically competent engineers who can adapt and learn in an ever-changing world and can address the challenges mentioned above. Our curriculum enables students to master fundamental and frontier knowledge in core areas such as biomedical engineering, control and robotic systems, integrated circuits and systems, signal, information and multimedia processing, solid state electronics and photonics, wireless communication, and networking. Our classrooms are equipped with the latest multi-media facilities. We actively develop on-line materials to supplement in-class instruction. With this preparation, our graduates go on to a variety of career opportunities in engineering and hi-tech industries, business and management, as well as to higher degree studies locally or overseas.

We have amassed a group of faculty with PhDs from world-renowned universities and with work experience in high-technology industry. Our faculty members are internationally recognized as academic leaders, inventors, entrepreneurs, Editors of academic journals, and Fellows of peer societies such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Our research is supported by laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Fundamental research contributions in our core areas are linked through five multi-disciplinary themes: robotics and autonomous systems, display and sensors everywhere, big data systems, ecotronics and green information and communication technologies, and bio-systems and bio-information technologies.
