Prof. Ross MURCH is a Chair Professor and
Department Head of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong
University of Science and Technology and an IEEE Fellow. His current research
interests include Wireless
Communication Systems with a focus on Multiple Input Multiple output (MIMO)
Wireless Systems, Compact MIMO Antenna design, Cooperative Wireless systems
WiMAX and WLAN. His unique expertise lies in his combination of knowledge
from both wireless communication systems and electromagnetics. He has
contributed both to the design of compact multiple antennas for wireless
communications and also physical layer algorithms for enhancing the bit rates
of wireless systems with over 200 publications and patents in the area of
wireless communications that have attracted over 3000 citations. He also has
industrial experience in the wireless communication area through sabbaticals at
Allgon (a Swedish antenna supplier for Nokia), AT&T (
Prof. Murch was elevated to IEEE
Fellow, one of the IEEE’s most prestigious honors, “for contributions
to multiple antennas systems for wireless communications”. He is also a
Chartered Engineer and a member of IEE. In 1996 and 2001 he won engineering
teaching excellence appreciation awards. He is also the current and founding
Director of the Center for Wireless Information Technology which was begun in
August 1997. Since 2002 he has been the Director for the MSc in
Telecommunications program. He has successfully graduated and advised 23 MPhil
students (an MPhil is a 2 year research degree) and 9 PhD students.
Prof. Ross Murch received his bachelors degree in Electrical and Electronic
Engineering from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand where he graduated
in 1986 with first class honors and was ranked first in his class. During his
bachelors degree he was the recipient of several academic prizes including the
John Blackett prize for engineering and also the Austral Standard Cables prize.
In 1990 he completed his PhD, also in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at
the
He has also taught a wide range of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
subjects including Digital Communications, Communication Systems, Antennas and
Propagation for Wireless Communications, Electromagnetics, Microprocessors,
Optics, Image Processing and Mathematics. He has also been involved in a
variety of administrative duties including the Director of the MSc
Telecommunications program from 2002, Director of the Center of Wireless Information
Technology since 2007, Director of the Computer Engineering Program form
1997-2001, Chair of the Engineering School Research Committee since 2004 and
the Chair of the Departmental Substantiation and Promotions Committee since
2006.
